Judges before sampling the beer for inspiration
Judges after sampling
- it’s got to fit on the label or tap handle; there is no room for overly long names, explanations, appendices, codicils, excursuses or codas
- it needs to be relatively easy to say—you want customers to be able to let the bartender know what they want without having to write it out or having to use semaphore
- the name has to be approved by the Liquor Control Board, which means either nothing higher than a PG-13 rating or the implication is too subtle for them to get
- clever is good; witty is good
- allusions to beer history or culture get extra credit
- it can’t have been trademarked or be in use already (we will check this out at TESS and Google; you can too if you are so inclined)
- the selected entry will become the property of Brew: The Museum of Beer.
- the “judges” are likely to deal with this in a totally arbitrary and capricious manner, so even if you have the best entry, it does not necessarily mean you’re going to win—good luck!
